Guidelines for Observing Ramadan 2024: Dos and Don’ts for the Sacred Month

The holy month of Ramadan began on Monday, initiating a month-long period of reverence and observance for Muslim communities worldwide. With over a billion adherents participating, Ramadan entails fasting from sunrise to sunset, alongside prayers, acts of charity, and familial gatherings. Its timing varies annually due to its adherence to the lunar calendar, with this year’s commencement marked by the sighting of the crescent moon on the night of Sunday, March 10.

What is Ramadan?

Ramadan holds significant importance, dedicated to fasting, prayer, reflection, and charitable acts. Muslims commemorate the revelation of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad during this sacred time, with Laylat Al-Qadr, the holiest night, observed on Friday, April 5. The fasting period began at dawn on Monday, March 11, extending until dusk each day throughout the month.

Fasting during Ramadan serves as a practice of self-discipline and spiritual connection with God, requiring abstention from food, drink, gossip, negative thoughts, and other indulgences during daylight hours. The fast concludes each day with iftar, a communal meal where dates often play a traditional role.

Eid al-Fitr, the festival marking the end of Ramadan, is anticipated to commence around Tuesday, April 9, depending on the sighting of the new moon. Celebrations typically include familial gatherings, gift-giving, acts of charity, and festive feasting, signifying the culmination of the sacred month’s observances.
